Today, the House of Representatives voted on final passage of S. 1158, the Elie Wiesel Genocide and Atrocities Prevention Act of 2018. This bill requires important training in conflict and atrocities prevention for U.S. Foreign Service Officers, mandates an annual report to Congress by the President detailing efforts to prevent and respond to atrocities, and supports the need for interagency coordination through the Atrocities Prevention Board on atrocity prevention.
Humanity United Action applauds the leadership of Senators Ben Cardin (D-MD) and Todd Young (R-IN) for their efforts on this bill, along with the work of Representatives Ann Wagner (R-MO) and Joe Crowley (D-NY) on the House companion bill.
